 As a plus size woman, I've listened to experts and television personalities discuss overweight issues. I've often wondered if they've ever taken the time to speak to women and men that are plus sized, I doubt it. But nevertheless, they seem to be experts on the subject matter while offering their opinion with such disdain, as if most plus size people choose to be the size they are intentionally.
For me, weight gain started in my adolescent years, when I realized that food could be a comforter during really hard emotional times. Many young adults face these battles, including the ones that turn to drugs and alcohol. Yet they seem to get a very different, more compassionate response from the same society that downgrades plus size people. I lost weight when I got into sports, in my teenage years and then started gaining again in my mid twenties. Poor diet was a big contributor and lack of nutritional knowledge played a big roll as well. It seemed that fast food was my go to, while work and school were priority over making good health choices. The BIG opposition to being plus size, per the spectators, is the health concerns. Meanwhile, the healthcare and pharmaceutical companies make money, comedians make fat jokes, and so called "in shape" people smoke, drink, and take drugs, all while pointing their finger and shaming the plus size community. How healthy is that? Currently our country is facing an opioid crisis, drunk drivers are still causing traffic accidents and marihuana is legal in most states and in all of these situations, there are all types of programs to help them improve their lives. Yet, if someone is struggling with their weight, they are seen as weak, have no self-control, and are presented with daily commercials to pay for a diet plan. So, now some of us are taking a stand, saying "we matter" too. Our weight is our issue to overcome in the way we see fit. If society chooses not to have compassion for us, then we’ll keep it moving. Our bodies, and minds may continue the struggle of living a healthier life, however, that will not stop us from enjoying the journey of life with the people who love and value us.

Latatiana came to our recent auditions and was excited about modeling some of our cute clothes. Standing 5'10" wearing a size 16/18 she was ready to smile for the camera and show off her beauty. She heard about Urban Thick from one of our modeling ads on Facebook. It just so happened that a friend of hers saw the ad and by knowing Saundra's aspirations, immediately shared it with her. Place the item inside a light weight laundry bag, choose the gentle wash cycle in cold water, and lay flat until dry. She was grateful for the advice and hopefully she's still enjoying her light blue twist style Ralph Lauren sweater today.
